Trivia:
According to the book Desperate Networks, show creator Marc Cherry insisted every actor had to audition for a part. Several actresses up for the part of Susan, including Mary-Louise Parker, Calista Flockhart and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, declined to audition and passed on the role. Felicity Huffman also declined to audition for the role of Lynette, preferring to be offered the role instead. Her agents convinced her otherwise, and she agreed to audition. Marc Cherry was so impressed with her performance, that he offered her the part on the spot. moreQuotes:
Sister Mary Bernard: Money can't buy happiness.Gabrielle: Sure it can! That's just a lie we tell poor people to keep them from rioting.

No need to comment on the basic plot as others have done that already. Why is that the most fun you can have on television?
1.) The humor and outrageousness of the situations that take place in this show. As long as the viewer "gets the joke", the humor can be found. This isn't to be taken completely seriously. There have been episodes where the group of friends and I watch and we couldn't stop laughing.
2.) The writing really is good. There are complications after complications being piled on, which only intrigues the viewer more. After watching episode 7 last night, we can hardly wait until the next episode. Not a minute of an episode is wasted. And some of the lines are howlers (intentionally).
This is as good as a soap can get. Humor, drama, mystery, and it's all wrapped up in one fantastic package! For those who complain the show has no morals? Please! It's *television*, and adult television at that...I think most adults can take it. "Desperate Housewives" is there to entertain, and it does so marvelously! And then some.
If you haven't watched yet, wait until it starts in the repeats and catch what all the fuss is about. You won't be sorry...you'll be hooked.
