Edgar Ramirez to play Ilich Ramirez Sanchez

10 November 2008 7:35 AM, PST | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Actor Edgar Ramirez has signed on to star in French director Olivier Assayas’ upcoming “Ilich: Story of Carlos,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The film focuses on the true story of Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, a Venezuelan revolutionary who collaborated with radical groups in several countries, including Syria and Iraq.

Known also as Carlos and later Jackal, he became notorious after raiding the Opec headquarters in Vienna in 1975. Sanchez is currently serving a life sentence in a French prison.

The trade says Assayas specifically wanted Ramirez to play the lead character. The actor will explore several languages for the part.

Ramirez’s credits include “Domino,” “The Bourne Ultimatum” and “Vantage Point.” He will next be seen in Steven Soderbergh’s “Che” flicks “The Argentine” and “Guerilla.”

Also, Ramirez recently replaced Javier Bardem as Pablo Escobar in Joe Carnahan’s upcoming “Killing Pablo.”

Five more join ‘Burning Palms’

29 October 2008 11:29 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Dylan McDermott, Zoe Saldana, Lake Bell, Nick Stahl, Paz Vega and Shannen Doherty have signed on to star in Christopher Landon’s upcoming satire” Burning Palms.”

According to THR, the film pokes fun at Angeleno stereotypes as told through five interlacing stories, with each character moving toward a dark and often comic fate.

Also on board are Emily Meade, Rosamund Pike, Colleen Camp, Jamie Chung and Robert Hoffman, among others.

Wow, what a cast.

Landon, who co-wrote “Blood and Chocolate” and D.J. Caruso’s “Disturbia,” is directing his own script.

Some cast members already are established performers. Saldana, who most recently starred in “Vantage Point,” will next be seen in J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” reboot. Bell is currently onscreen in “Pride and Glory.”

As for Vega, she will next be seen as Plaster of Paris in “The Spirit.” Meanwhile, Meade recently wrapped filming for Wes Craven’s “25/8.”

Universal Picks Up Skyscraper Disaster Movie Pitch

28 October 2008 3:22 AM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

Is the big-budget disaster movie trend suddenly on the rise again? Universal has preemptively bought a pitch for a film called Skyscraper that is described as a "modern-day Towering Inferno." The spec script was written by Mike Sobel, a former lawyer turned writer who has just sold his first two big scripts, with Skyscraper being one of them. Neal Moritz (of I Am Legend, Vantage Point, and Made of Honor most recently) is producing the project. The story focuses on a Donald Trump-like developer who sets out to build a mile-high structure in Chicago. When the tower starts to falter, a crew must rescue the city from mayhem. I'm not sure what to think about this yet. The whole concept seems like a sore thumb in the Hollywood line-up for the next five or so years, but I suppose it could be good. For those unaware of the reference,

Forest Whitaker to direct and star in Louis Armstrong biopic

13 October 2008 4:26 AM, PDT | From Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news

Since Forest Whitaker's sensational, Oscar-winning turn as the creepy, charismatic and sometimes-cannibalistic Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland, he's starred in a bunch of less-than-stellar efforts like Vantage Point and Street Kings. But it looks like he's found a role that will make good on his potential: Whitaker will direct and star in a biopic of the infamous scat-singing, scratchy-voiced virtuoso Louis Armstrong.

The Big Picture Interview with Dennis Quaid

9 October 2008 12:16 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

We know the name, of course, but Dennis Quaid has consistently flown under the radar despite a career that would make the overwhelming majority of actors jealous. He's been in a few Best Picture nominees (Breaking Away, The Right Stuff, and Traffic), some big hits (Innerspace, The Rookie, Something to Talk About, and Vantage Point), and he looks like he's had a barrel of fun along the way in a 30-year career filled with memorable lead and supporting roles.

The Express: The Ernie Davis Story is the first of five films for Quaid that will be released within the next 18 months or so. It's the life story of the first African-American Heisman Trophy winner, who not only battled racism on and off the field, but leukemia, as well. In the film, Davis is played by Rob Brown, and Quaid plays Syracuse football coach Ben Schwartzwalder.

Quaid Denies Ryan Is Moving For Full Custody Of Son

29 September 2008 9:09 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Hollywood actor Dennis Quaid has dismissed rumours ex-wife Meg Ryan is filing for full custody of their teenage son Jack after tabloid reports surfaced questioning his sobriety.

The Vantage Point star split from Ryan in 2000 and their divorce was finalised in 2001.

The couple, who share custody of 16-year-old Jack, has left Hollywood guessing over the details behind their split for the last eight years, but Ryan finally broke her silence last week, when she claimed Quaid had cheated on her.

The revelation prompted sources close to the former couple to leak further information about their divorce, with one insider claiming that their joint custody agreement included a stipulation about Quaid's sobriety, reports the New York Daily News.

The source says, "Meg came to believe he was drinking again and wanted full physical custody of Jack."

But Quaid has refuted the reports, insisting nothing has changed in their care of their son since the settlement was made.

He says, "Meg and I have always had joint custody of Jack without any stipulations whatsoever."

Quaid is now married to Kimberly Buffington, and the couple welcomed twins last year.

A representative for Ryan could not be reached for comment as WENN went to press.

Quaid Launches Scathing Attack On Ex-wife Ryan

29 September 2008 5:15 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Dennis Quaid has slammed his ex-wife Meg Ryan for revealing all about their 2000 marriage break-up, insisting her allegations of his infidelity will only cause their son Jack more "pain" and "turmoil".

Ryan and Quaid have refused to divulge the details of their split for the past eight years, but the actress once dubbed 'America's sweetheart' recently opened up about the dark days that followed her divorce.

She told America's InStyle magazine, "Dennis was not faithful to me for a very long time, and that was very painful. I found out more about that after I was divorced."

But Quaid is furious about her candid comments, and has chastised Ryan for dragging up the past - saying she should think twice about what she airs to the press if she wants to protect their 16-year-old son's feelings.

And he has hinted that Ryan's accusations of infidelity are not completely accurate - although he refuses to be drawn on more details.

He tells the New York Daily News, "It was eight years ago, and I find it unbelievable that Meg continues publicly to rehash and rewrite the story of our relationship.

"Also, I find it regrettable that our son, Jack, has to be reminded in a public way of the turmoil and pain that every child feels in a divorce."

The Vantage Point star is now married to Kimberly Buffington, and the couple welcomed twins last year.

He adds, "I, myself, moved on years ago and am fortunate to have a happy, beautiful family."

An Exorcism Takes Place in Columbian Jungle

25 September 2008 1:57 PM, PDT | From bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news

Edgar Ramirez (Vantage Point, "The Bourne Ultimatum) is set to topline a new horror thriller entitled VIENE EL JAGUAR. In the film he'll play a tortured ex-priest trailing an exorcist in the Colombian jungle (now that's interesting!). Carlos Moreno will direct from a screenplay that he co-wrote with Alonso Torres. "Jaguar" is based on the recent revelation that a group of under-age Colombian para-militaries, Los Cruzados, painted their nails black, practiced Satanic rites and ate human flesh to exorcize the spirits of villagers they had killed, Moreno explained at Spain's San Sebastian Film Festival on Thursday. Produced by Colombia's Antorcha Films, "Jaguar" reteams the talent behind Sundance-player "Perro come perro" (Dog Eat Dog).

Clive Owen Shoots 'Em Up in 'The International' Trailer

11 September 2008 7:32 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

Remember how Clive Owen showed up in The Bourne Identity as a fellow/rival assassin to Matt Damon's butt-kicking amnesiac? After watching the trailer for his new film, The International, I feel like director Tom Tykwer decided that he wanted to make something like that guy's own movie.

Okay, so maybe it's a bit more generic than that, with Owen playing an Interpol agent teaming up with a partner/potential love interest/possible traitor* (Naomi Watts) to take on some big bad bank with ties to all sorts of global espionage, and probably some ridiculous withdrawal fees to boot.

I'm not so hot on the prospect of the February "dumping ground" release date (see: Jumper, Vantage Point), but it'll be nice to have a more testosterone-fueled offering to counter-program all that other Valentine's Day fare. Besides, if Tykwer (Run Lola Run) decides that a big-budget thriller is worth his while,

Review: Traitor

27 August 2008 8:03 AM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

Filed under: Action, Drama, Thrillers, Mystery & Suspense, Theatrical Reviews

As with most any other genre, pitching a thriller seems to go that much more swimmingly once one finds an ideal blockbuster reference point with which to do half of the leg work. It's 'Die Hard meets this', 'Speed on a that', and, when in doubt, just say the damn thing is 'Hitchcockian'.

Post-2001, the likes of TV's '24' and 'Sleeper Cell', and film's Jason Bourne franchise, have tapped into both our political climate and pop culture zeitgeist, into a globe-trotting, gun-toting fear of the here and there and always now. Jeffrey Nachmanoff's Traitor feels like the first film that has itself been directly spawned in the wake of those successes, as opposed to merely being bolstered by it, and while it may overtake, say, Vantage Point in terms of plausible plotting and worldly knowledge, it remains
