Exclusive Clip from Just Buried

7 January 2009 6:00 PM, PST | From Fangoria.com | See recent Fangoria news

With Chaz Thorne's award-winning horror/comedy Just Buried (see Fearful Feature here) getting ready to arrive on DVD later this month, Fango just snagged the first in a series of exclusive clips from the film, which stars Rose Byrne (28 Weeks Later) and Jay Baruchel (Knocked Up, Tropic Thunder).

Synopsis: "Oliver (Jay Baruchel) is destined for an uneventful life until the day he and his brother Jackie breeze into town to attend the funeral of their estranged father. To everyone's bewilderment, Oliver inherits his father's estate - a funeral home.

Oliver learns from the handyman Henry (Graham Greene) that the home is on the verge of bankruptcy. That night, his life gets increasingly complicated when he takes a drunken drive with the bewitching embalmer Roberta (Rose Byrne) and collides with a hiker.

Roberta cleverly disguises the fatality as an accident, providing Oliver with his first paying customer and launching the

Name the Noms: Oscar Make-up and Visual Effects Finalists

6 January 2009 10:38 PM, PST | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

So that's how that works...

Photo: Paramount Pictures via "New York Times" Yesterday In Contention got revealed the seven finalists for the Oscar Best Makeup category and today the Academy sent over the seven finalists in the running in the Visual Effects category at the 2009 Oscars. You will remember back on December 12 we published the list of 15 Visual Effects contenders and the three I took a guess at receiving the nominations (Benjamin Button, Hellboy II and The Mummy) are still in the running. Here are the seven remaining as three will be announced on January 22. Australia The Curious Case of Benjamin Button The Dark Knight Hellboy II: The Golden Army Iron Man Journey to the Center of the Earth The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor As for the makeup contenders I am not so sure Button will be able to carryover as a lot of that I believe was

This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: January 6, 2009

5 January 2009 11:26 PM, PST | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed The Tudors - The Complete Second Season I don't know what happened between last year and this year, but I re-watched the first season of "The Tudors" in anticipation of plugging in ten episode second season, but I'll be damned if I just wasn't interested and I never did. I guess it surprised me considering I loved the first season (read the review here) and have been looking forward to the second. I have a feeling if I pop it in I will finish all ten off in one stretch. Who knows... Perhaps just writing this will motivate me to do so because I did thoroughly enjoy what amounts to an R-rated soap opera the first time around and with Peter O'Toole joining the cast for the second season how could I not enjoy this one? DVD Talk's Top 20 DVDs of 2008

4 January 2009 11:21 PM, PST | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

I wish I had more time to watch DVDs. Realistically, because of the 200- something movies I have to plow through every year, unless I have to watch a DVD, I usually don't. I like sports too much. So, I've got stacks of the damn things still in the cellophane.

But if it's an old favorite, I'll always find time for it, it seems. And I picked up a few new versions of old favorites over the holidays, one of which - the 50th anniversary edition of Touch of Evil - has made the list of 2008's top 20 DVDs, compiled by DVD Talk.

It's full of old gems recently restored or re-released as well as some of the biggest hits of the year and a smattering of TV-on-dvd. Led by the definitive collection of The Godfather trilogy, here are the 11 films in DVD Talk's top ten:

1 - The Godfather (Coppola

Must Watch: ‘2008: The Cinescape’

4 January 2009 10:55 PM, PST | From newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news

You may remember Matt Shapiro from his awesome viral video last year, “2007: A Year for Drama.”  If you haven’t seen it, check it out here. After the success of that one, he made another music video to look back on the films of 2008.  It’s amazing.  I’ve watched it about four times now. Like many of the YouTube comments say, this should be the opening for the Oscars this year.

Here is the video:

Below are the list of films he used to create the compilation:

List of Movies (in order of appearance):

-The Dark Knight

-Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

-Wall-e

-Quantum of Solace

-Iron Man

-Defiance

-Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

-Australia

-Forgetting Sarah Marshall

-Wall-e

-The Curious Case of Benjamin

-The Dark Knight

-Frost/Nixon

-Wall-e

-The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Valkyrie Review

4 January 2009 5:10 PM, PST | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

Short Version: While Valkyrie offers a few thrills, the rest is just Ok.

Screen Rant reviews Valkyrie

Valkyrie is director Bryan Singer’s WWII true-life ensemble film about a cabal of Nazi officers who conspired  to kill Adolf Hitler during the later days of the war. Overshadowing all of that is, of course, Tom Cruise, who stars as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, the German officer who hatches the plan to overthrow Hitler, codenamed Valkyrie.

So let’s identify some of the obvious issues this movie faces:

A) Anyone who’s had third grade history knows that the plot against Hitler ultimately fails. Drawing tension out of  a story whose end is already known is a tricky feat.

B) The language issue. It’s a coin toss for which would’ve been more painful: hearing Tom Cruise and Co. trying to speak German, or hearing Tom and Co. speaking English inflected with German accents.

2008 has come and gone, and so have the movie stars of it. Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man and Tropic Thunder? Freida Pinto in Slumdog Millionaire? Please, that’s old news my friends. In a country that has replaced the motto of “land of the free, home of the brave” ...

The 20 Best Movies Of 2008

4 January 2009 9:20 AM, PST | From AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news

This was an absolutely crazy year in movies, and my best list was never such a confused and difficult task. If I were going for a worst list, I could make it about 50 without any problem, and I could tell you the exact order I'd want them in. I don't think I'll even bother with it this year, but the absolute worst is The Love Guru, followed closely by Indiana Jones and The Triple Dog Dare You To Fit Something Into This Movie That Would Make It More Stupid. Before I get on to this list, I've really got to explain it. Generally, when I make my top ten list for the year, I start out by making a much too large list of everything I liked during the year. This usually gives me something like 30-40 movies, because I put in things that even I think are only slightly above-average.

Discuss: The Comedies of 2009

3 January 2009 11:02 AM, PST | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

With the R-rated comedy becoming one of the hottest trends of the past couple years (thanks, in part, to a dude named Judd Apatow), we're starting to see a bunch more creative, down-to-earth (albeit foul-mouthed) comedies hit theaters -- with some, like Tropic Thunder, Burn After Reading and Knocked Up, fighting for awards consideration. But what will 2009 bring? Are we on a similar path as both 2007 and 2008, or will the new year bring back the boring, familiar plot threads and idiotic characters? Here's what we're looking at:

*Film(s) to watch that month

++Apatow involvement

# Best comedy of the year

January: Bride Wars, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, New in Town (Grade: C-)

February: *++Fanboys, He's Just Not That Into You, Pink Panther 2, Confessions of a Shopaholic, Miss February, Fired Up, *Youth in Revolt (Grade: B)

March: All About Steve, *I Love You, Man, This Side of the Truth, The Accidental Husband,

'New York Times' Crix Name Noms... Do You Agree?

3 January 2009 1:45 AM, PST | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

The trio of New York Times critics (Manohla Dargis, A.O. Scott and Stephen Holden) have weighed in with their own nominations for the year's best in movies with their selections for Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress and Original and Adapted Screenplays. Quickly glancing through the list I see Manohla Dargis loved Charlie Kaufman's Synecdoche, New York (at least the acting) and is the only one that gave The Dark Knight any love. Thankfully Slumdog Millionaire wasn't "nominated" for anything other than a lone Adapted Screenplay notice from A.O. Scott. Happy-Go-Lucky saw plenty of attention and believe it or not, there isn't one film all three could agree on for Best Picture with Wall-e and Happy-Go-Lucky being the front-runners as they were mentioned twice - Dargis was the main reason for this as her selections didn't show up on either Stephen Holden or A.
