Ten Worst Movies of 2008

24 December 2008 12:03 AM, PST | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Worst 10 Movies of 2008 A Worst Movies list is obviously all dependent on how many films someone sees over the course of the year. Being someone that has to write about movies for a living I see my fair share, but I also do my best to avoid as many bad films as I can. So far this year I have reviewed 134 theatrical releases, which is a personal record for me since starting this site in 2003 so I would like to think I saw my fair share of bad films. Yet, so many films weren't screened for critics and I tend to avoid films such as Disaster Movie, College, Mad Money, Superhero Movie!, Meet Dave, The Hottie and the Nottie or anything from Tyler Perry. So this list is my personal list of worst films and I am sure many of you will have a different top ten and I can't wait to hear them.

Is ‘The Green Hornet’ Movie On Life Support?

23 December 2008 12:03 PM, PST | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

On a basic level, I’d love to see a modern day movie adaptation of the 1960s TV series The Green Hornet. As it happens, this very project has been slowly creeping forward for about a year and a half. For the longest time, the only solid news regarding the film was the fact that Seth Rogen would be involved with the film. At first he was attached as a producer and possibly the lead. Then came word that Rogen wasn’t sure whether the film would lean more or less towards a comedy, and that they’d decide as they wrote the script.

Nothing like having a clear vision for your film right from the start.

The writers’ strike put a hold on any development for a few months, but when we next heard about the film it looked like they had decided on a direction: a laugh-riot comedy.

Fearless Forecast - Reese and Vince vs. The Vampires

26 November 2008 2:01 PM, PST | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

As we always do on holiday weekends, we give you the full four- or five-day estimate rather than one that covers Friday - Sunday and then another one for the grand total. It's too many numbers. So, we've got five days this week and really six movies that will make a significant amount of money over that time.

Before we get to the new releases, let us remind you of the movies already in theaters; Twilight, Bolt, and Quantum of Solace should all perform well over the holiday for a number of reasons. Twilight is still going to make a lot more money, and a great time to start is when kids want to get away from their families over the drawn-out weekend. They'll have a full day Friday to check it out with their friends, and I think that should be a peak time for the vampire flick.

'Star Wars' Geeks Unite! 'Fanboys' Trailer is Here

3 November 2008 3:30 PM, PST | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Photo: Weinstein Co. Making fun of die-hard Twilight fans is sort of unfair because a lot of the outspoken really cut-throat ones are relatively young, easily impressionable and just have a crush on their source material and will likely grow out of it (at least the overly passionate part). It's either that or they are older mothers that have found some connection to their past through the story, but they aren't the outrageously vocal ones. However, people that are still Star Wars fans, and I am talking the die-hard folk that still troll the Star Wars fan sites, dress up as stormtroopers and boycott The Weinstein Co. because they thought they weren't going to release the original cut of Fanboys before Steve "Drillbit Taylor" Brill went in and did some reshoots are pretty freaking crazy if you ask me. But it seems all their crying and complaining against what was

The Wait for 'Fanboys' Continues

27 October 2008 6:43 PM, PDT | From Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news

The Weinstein Company has, according to Slash Film, moved Fanboys from November to open February 6, 2009, another delay. The studio  picked up Fanboy for release some time back and the utterly charming tale of friends trying to get their dying friend to see The Phantom Menace has been hung up ever since.

Clearly they have little faith in the film given it will now open opposite Push, Pink Panther 2, and the Jennifer Aniston’s He’s Just Not That Into You.

When they picked up the movie, it was essentially complete and ready for release but instead, the Weinsteins wanted to tinker with it and the creators and fans were horrified at the notion that the charm might be replaced with something different. They decided to reedit the film their way then test screen both versions before deciding which one to release.

Weinstein decided the cancer subplot was too downbeat and

Green Hornet To Be A Laugh-Riot Comedy

19 September 2008 6:37 PM, PDT | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

I am not excited about this news.

We’ve already known for a while that Seth Rogen will be playing the Green Hornet in the movie of the same name. A while back word surfaced that Stephen Chow (Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle) had landed the role of Kato, the asian sidekick. Now comes word that Chow will be directing the film as well.

Let’s get something straight: I am a HUGE Stephen Chow fan - I loved both of the above mentioned movies and offer up proof via my 5 star review of Kung Fu Hustle. I also like Seth Rogen, although I don’t worship at the altar of his comedy as so many other movie news sites seem to do.

On the other hand, I have very fond memories of the old Green Hornet TV series. It was on around the same time period as the old

Ten Things You Never Knew About Seth Rogen

9 September 2008 10:04 PM, PDT | From Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news

Not so long ago, Seth Rogen was a Canadian high school dropout who spent his time between acting gigs getting stoned. Now the 26-year-old presides over a new gang of comedy talent and has turned his old pot-addled lifestyle into a string of hit movies alongside director pal Judd Apatow. With starring roles in the likes of The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up, and writing credits on Drillbit Taylor and Superbad under his belt, his ascent to the A List shows no sign of slowing down. As new movie Pineapple Express (in which he plays - you guessed it - a stoner) opens in the UK this week, we find out more about the geek-turned-Hollywood star. 1. Seth's mum Sandy, a social worker, and dad Mark, who is employed by non-profit organisations, met on a kibbutz in Israel. Seth says of his folks: "They're radical Jewish socialists... Where I (more)

Cruise Planning To Get Into ‘Food Fight’

12 August 2008 3:56 AM, PDT | From MovieBlog.Ugo.com | See recent Ugo MovieBlog news

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tom Cruise is loosely attached to “Food Fight,” a warmhearted comedy about a snooty New York chef who is forced to cook meals at a school cafeteria, with Cruise playing the role of the chef. The project is set up at Universal-based Working Title. Veteran scribe Adam Brooks, who most recently wrote and directed the divorce dramedy “Definitely, Maybe,” is attached to write the screenplay. “Drillbit Taylor” helmer Steven Brill had been in talks to direct “Food Fight,” but they came to naught; a search for a new director is under way. “Food Fight” would mark a departure for Cruise, who has made few comedies since his breakout role in 1983’s “Risky Business”: His last such lead role was in 1996’s dramedy “Jerry Maguire.” In “Tropic Thunder,” Cruise plays an overweight, over-the-top studio exec in what advance word has billed as a movie-stealing performance.

No 'Salt' for Tom Cruise, but How about a 'Food Fight'?

11 August 2008 9:19 PM, PDT | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Should we look at Tom Cruise's career as being on a downward spiral when scripts are being rewritten to turn a character he was attached to play for a long time are turned into females and on the same day it is announced he will be a school cafeteria chef? Personally I think it is too soon to make any snap judgments on Cruise's career as it seems like it is a career that would be very tough to handle at the moment, but as Angelina Jolie takes his place in Edwin A. Salt (a title that is sure to change) Cruise is now loosely attached to a film called Food Fight for Working Title. The picture is described as a warmhearted comedy about a snooty New York chef who is forced to cook meals at a school cafeteria, with Cruise playing the role of the chef. Adam Brooks

Filling 'Prince of Persia's Hole...Wait, That Didn't Come Out Right

7 August 2008 8:55 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Let's see if we can clear up your calendar for you. Ok, last week, Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer moved Prince of Persia back almost a year. The film was supposed to open on June 19, 2009, and now it's Memorial Day, 2010. Why the postponement? If I had to guess, seriously, I think it's so Disney can get a Comic Con jump start next summer. Look what it did for Iron Man, and watch what it will do for Watchmen.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Otherwise, I have no idea why they'd push it back that far unless it's the labor issues, but that doesn't seem to be stopping very many movies at the moment. When they pushed the release date back, though, it opened up a major hole in the Summer 2009 schedule, and studios have been frantically trying to fill it. However, most of the tentpoles are set,

Prom Night Slashes Box Office

15 April 2008 10:35 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

After a series of horrible performances at the box office by horror flicks, Sony's Prom Night graduated with honors over the weekend as it took in $20.8 million, far more than the studio said that it expected -- and about what it cost to produce. It beat the Keanu Reeves cop drama Street Kings, which opened with $12.5 million, by a wide margin. Overall, the box office grossed $95 million down from $118 million for the comparable weekend a year ago -- a drop of 19.6 percent. Through the first 15 weeks of the year, ticket sales are off 3.5 percent and attendance, 6.6 percent from last year. The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Media by Numbers (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):1. Prom Night, Sony, $20,804,941, (New); 2. Street Kings, Fox Searchlight, $12,469,631, (New); 3. 21, Sony/Col, $10,470,173, 3 Wks. ($61,738,420); 4. Nim's Island, 20th Century Fox, $9,111,667, 2 Wks. ($25,391,566); 5. Leatherheads, Universal, $6,276,665, 2 Wks. ($21,976,580); 6. Horton Hears a Who!, 20th Century Fox, $5,920,566, 4 Wks. ($139,548,920); 7. Smart People, Miramax, $4,092,465, (New); 8. Theaters Celebrate Prom Night

14 April 2008 10:33 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

After months of frightful box-office performances by horror flicks, Sony/Screen Gems's Prom Night debuted with $22.7 million over the weekend at the high end of analysts' predictions. It was the best debut for a horror film this year. In second place was Fox Searchlight's R-rated Street Kings, starring Keanu Reeves and Forest Whitaker, which brought in an estimated $12 million. In its third week, 21 was still showing a strong hand as it took in $11 million. Everything else on the theater marquees looked weak, however, as the box office wound up with less revenue than it did a year ago for the fourth straight weekend. The top 12 films earned $82.6 million, more than 19 percent below what it took in during the comparable weekend last year. The fourth-ranked film, Fox's Nim's Island, brought in $9 million, while the George Clooney drama Leatherheads rounded out the top five with $6.2 million. The only other film to open wide this weekend, Miramax's Smart People, wound up with $4.2 million, to place seventh. The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Media by Numbers:1. Prom Night, $22.7 million; 2. Street Kings, $12 million; 3. 21, $11 million; 4. Nim's Island, $9 million; 5. Leatherheads, $6.2 million; 6. Horton Hears a Who!, $6 million; 7. Smart People, $4.2 million; 8. The Ruins, $3.3 million; 9. Superhero Movie, $3.1 million; 10. Drillbit Taylor, $2.1 million.

Leatherheads Loses More Yardage

8 April 2008 10:33 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

As expected, Universal's George Clooney starrer Leatherheads was thrown for a bigger loss than studio executives had predicted. The period football comedy, which many analysts had suggested would be a sure winner at the box office over the weekend, came in a disappointing third with only $12.7 million. Analysts had forecast a $15-20-million take for the film. Second place went to the Jodie Foster family film Nim's Island from 20th Century Fox, which opened with $13.2 million. Holding on to the top spot was Sony's gambling flick 21, which raked in $15.3 million. Although comparisons with last year's box office was difficult because it fell on the Easter holiday then, analysts said that the overall gross was down significantly from the comparable weekend in recent years. The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Media by Numbers (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):1. 21, Sony/Columbia, $15,337,418, 2 Wks. ($46,77,0,173); 2. Nim's Island, 20th Century Fox, $13,210,579, (New); 3. Leatherheads, Universal, $12,682,595, (New); 4. Horton Hears A Who!, 20th Century Fox, $9,115,987, 3 Wks. ($131,076,768); 5. The Ruins, Paramount, $8,003,421, (New); 6. Superhero Movie, Mgm, $5,417,920, 2 Wks. ($16,899,661); 7. Tyler Perry's Meet The Browns, Lionsgate, $3,418,255, 3 Wks. ($37,662,502); 8. Drillbit Taylor, Paramount, $3,405,937, 3 Wks. ($25,490,483); 9. Shutter, 20th Century Fox, $2,830,336, 3 Wks. ($23,138,277); 10. 10,000 B.C., Warner Bros., $2,797,409, 5 Wks. ($89,649,915).
